Colour Sound Experiment has expanded its fleet of vehicles with the addition of a brand new vehicle and trailer – a stunning Volvo FH460 Globetrotter Euro 6 tractor unit, complete with a 45ft Schmitz Cargobull low profile semi-trailer FERROPLAST – EXPRESS.
Chosen for its efficiency and dynamism, this vehicle is an investment made to provide convenience for haulage equipment for tours and festivals across the UK and Europe. It will also provide customers with an added element of cost-effectiveness as Colour Sound can offer independent haulage services for large one-off trips.
The truck will be particularly busy during the upcoming festival season and will help streamline overall production logistics by reducing off-site pickups required.
“All of our vessels have been purchased with the aim of making our operations as flexible and diverse as possible to suit the needs of our customers,” commented Hayden Cruickshank of Color Sound. “Having the Polar Region greatly enhances the capability of this service.”
With shows, events and projects involving increasing amounts of equipment, a larger, more spacious option was needed in addition to the existing haulage and the new truck joins a 12-tonne truck delivered in November.
The 460 tractor is one of Volvo’s flagship products and a popular heavy commercial vehicle, known as one of the most reliable trucks on the market. The letter “FH” stands for “Forward High Entry Control”, with the numbers referring to the engine. Features include cruise control, ABS, gearbox oil temperature monitoring, GPS, etc.
The powerful automatic gearbox works with Volvo’s innovative I-Shift automatic transmission system which helps make precise changes and communicates with the engine for maximum performance, making driving easier, safer and more comfortable without a heavy clutch or stick to deal with.
The I-Shift system is also designed to save fuel, and each gear change is precisely timed.
The diesel engine has an output of 338 kW/460 hp at 1400-1900 rpm, the unit consists of two axles and six wheels, two 295 60 22.5 s at the front and a pair of 315 60 22.5 s at the rear.
It features dual-circuit compressed air brakes, X-cam drum brakes with a compressor capacity of 900 liters/minute, front and rear disc brakes, in addition to ABS and spring-type auxiliary parking brakes on the front and rear axles.
The trailer is made of FERROPLAST, which combines the increased insulation of the new rigid polyurethane foam NX17 with durable multi-layer metal surfaces on both sides. Using a bonding process, Schmitz Cargobull uses this material to build boxes with surfaces that are completely resistant to vapor diffusion. FERROPLAST bodies are energy-saving, hygienic, age-resistant and easy to repair.
The trailer has three 19.5″ SAF disc brake axles and six 445″ 45″ 19.5″ “Super Single” wheels.
Both the tractor and trailer have full air ride capability, all of which ensures that the Color Sound range provides safe and comfortable journeys to and from site.
Color Sound already has one full-time Class 1 driver on its transportation team, and more drivers will have the opportunity to obtain their licenses in the coming months.
The first project for the new article and trailer was to transport the lighting and video set for the weekly Bangface EDM concert at Southport Holiday Park.
H, who is also a competitive drift racer, commented that if it wasn’t for the automatic gearbox, he would have already put the tractor on the track for a few donuts.
