INEOS Inovyn is partnering with Daimler Truck AG to operate the first customer pilot fleet of Mercedes-Benz Gen H2 trucks in Germany. In partnership with Amazon, Air Products, Holcim and Wiedmann & Winz, INEOS will test a new hydrogen-powered truck with its customers.
The Mercedes-Benz GenH2 trucks will go into service in mid-2024 for one year, and are the first heavy-duty liquid hydrogen trucks in Europe, capable of carrying up to 25 tons of PVC products with a range of more than 1,000 kilometers.
“INEOS Inovyn is Europe’s leading vinyl producer, delivering thousands of shipments to customers every month. We are committed to reducing CO2 emissions, and hydrogen fuel cell trucks can play an important role in helping us achieve this,” commented Wouter Bleukx.
INEOS Inovyn is one of the largest electrolysis technology operators, producing 60,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen per year across multiple sites. As both a user and producer of hydrogen, this puts us in a unique position at the heart of Europe’s hydrogen transition.
“This also provides an opportunity for customers to reduce their carbon footprint, and be among the first to benefit from this exciting new technology,” he added.
The trial allows INEOS Inovyn and its logistics partner VERVAEKE, which will manage the transport to our customers, to understand fuel cell technology in everyday operations. The truck uses liquid hydrogen as fuel and will be tested under real-world conditions.
Frédéric DeRomieux, CEO of VERVAEKE: “This test strengthens the partnership that has existed between VERVAEKE and INEOS Inovyn for many years. Our two companies share the same vision: to actively promote technological innovation and use it to reduce our environmental footprint. We are delighted to have their trust to collaborate on a pioneering project that promotes sustainability.”
The customer test fleet represents the next step in helping decarbonise transportation with hydrogen-powered trucks.
