The Freightliner EconicSD is based on the Mercedes-Benz model popular in Europe, but features more than 100 modifications to customize it for North America.
Mack Trucks and Freightliner Trucks announced major equipment this week at the WasteExpo trade show in Las Vegas.
Mack said it will have an all-electric Mack LR garbage truck model with a Mack compact electric powertrain operating in North America in 2019. The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) will test the concept vehicle.
Freightliner has introduced its new EconicSD low-entry, cab-over-engine waste collection truck.
In his announcement, Mack said all-electric vehicles now make the most sense in closed-loop applications where the truck returns home each night.
“It is clear that electric mobility will be part of the future of the trucking industry, and Mack is well-positioned to provide integrated, all-electric solutions for the North American market,” said Jonathan Randall, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Mack Trucks North. America. “DSNY is one of Mack’s largest customers, and the division is known for its progressive sustainability efforts. We look forward to working with them as we test the first all-electric LR model in a real-world application.”
New York City’s fleet operations are among the largest and most aggressive in testing alternative energy and fuel-powered vehicles.
“New York City DSNY looks forward to expanding our long-standing partnership with Mack Trucks by testing the electric LR,” said Rocky Derrico, Deputy Commissioner of New York City DSNY. “Sustainability is very important to New York City, and we are constantly testing new technology to help New York City reach its goal of reducing emissions by 80% by 2050.”
Freightliner’s EconicSD is a new entry into the market and features bodies from Heil Environmental (front loader) and McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing (rear loader). The cab and chassis were designed and manufactured at the Daimler Trucks plant in Wüth, Germany, based on the popular Mercedes-Benz Econic waste vehicle. Final assembly takes place at Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp.’s facility. In Gaffney, South Carolina. The company said more than 125 modifications were made to improve the truck for North America.

Powered by the new mid-range Detroit DD8 engine, the Freightliner EconicSD delivers 350 horsepower. and 1050 lbs.-ft. of torque. It also features Detroit’s Connect Virtual Technician remote diagnostic service to maximize uptime and productivity.
“The robust design and technological advances achieved with the DD8 engine make it well-suited to the demands associated with waste collection,” noted Jeff Allen, Senior Vice President, Operations and Specialty Vehicles, Daimler Trucks North America. “Freightliner EconicSD and DD8 make a durable and efficient combination.”
The truck is equipped with a suite of safety systems from Detroit Assurance such as Active Brake Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Departure System. Optional safety features include Side Protection Assist and an integrated camera system with 360-degree views displayed on the flat-panel dashboard screen.
The truck has a kneeling feature and a lift feature to lower or raise the cab height as needed.
“Waste collection vehicle drivers and passengers are in and out of their trucks throughout the day. The Freightliner EconicSD’s ergonomic design reduces fatigue and provides a more comfortable and productive work environment,” Allen said.
Seating options allow up to three passengers in the “High Cab” model.
