The EU took a strong stance in the fight against global climate change at the 2015 Paris climate summit by setting an ambitious target to cut emissions by 40% by 2030. Now it must turn that commitment into action. Ensuring that transport contributes its fair share of emissions reductions seems an almost insurmountable challenge.
In Europe, the reliance on oil for transport makes cars, trucks, planes and ships the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Road transport is a particular problem, accounting for 73% of all transport. Emissions, Because 290 million road vehicles in Europe depend on oil by more than 90%.
There are a wide range of low-emission transportation alternatives that could ease dependence on oil and reduce emissions in road transport: everything from batteries and ethanol to more efficient engines and smarter transport systems. But when can these solutions be scaled up to achieve significant emissions reductions?
The transition to low-emission transport can only be achieved through cooperation between carmakers, consumers, energy companies and technology providers, as well as national regulators and the EU. Binding targets have been set to reduce the carbon intensity of road transport fuels and boost the use of renewable energy by 2030. However, the European Commission’s recently adopted “Clean Energy for All” package proposes get rid of Conventional biofuels – the largest renewable energy source currently in transportation. Is the 2030 target now unrealistic? What solutions will national governments offer? Innovate To achieve emission reduction?
This event will bring together high-level EU and national decision-makers, industry representatives, energy experts and environmental groups for a frank conversation on how to boost emissions reduction efforts in transport, without harming European mobility and competitiveness.
Questions to be addressed at the event include:
What transport technologies will help Europe accelerate emissions reductions?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of these techniques?
Should national governments or the private sector take the lead in shifting to low-emission transport solutions?
Can policymakers ensure that low-emission transport energy contributions such as electricity and ethanol are maximized?
When: Wednesday, January 25, 2017, 3:00pm to 5:30pm, followed by a cocktail reception.
Location: Concert Noble, Rue d’Arlon 82, 1000 Brussels

Low impact of renewable ethanol use in Europe
Binding EU directives, the European Parliament, the European Council and the Court of Auditors all recognise that it is time to reverse indirect land use change in biofuel policy. So why doesn’t the Commission do it?
Falling in love again… with biofuel?
Europe needs to rethink its relationship with biofuels based on evidence, not emotion, if it wants to reap the climate benefits.
