The Scania 420 R tractor with the superior powertrain introduced in 2021 achieved a decisive victory in the fuel portion of the popular German comparison test for long-haul trucks, the European Truck Challenge. The delta was down to second place on the average diesel consumption in the test at 4.9%, which is a very large margin when it comes to comparison tests at this level. The Matrix • The Scania Super was 4.9% more fuel efficient than first runner-up
• A superior powertrain and newly updated cruise control system with Active Prediction were crucial to victory. This year, the ETC comparison test focused on long-range tractors with power up to 450 hp and torque between 2,200 and 2,400 Nm. All major manufacturers in Europe were invited to take part in the German test, which took place on roads south of Hannover at the end of May. But in the end, it was three brands that put their trucks on the starting line: Scania, Daf and Mercedes. Scania has chosen to enter the 420 R long range tractor with a sleeper cab. Despite having the lowest horsepower in the industry, the Scania had the highest torque at 2300Nm. The average gross weight of the truck and trailer in testing was 33.6 tons. The most fuel efficient truck award was given to Scania by Truck and Trailer Welt at an awards ceremony held in conjunction with the major NUFAM exhibition in Karlsruhe, Germany. Dutch truck manufacturer DAF received the ‘Drivers’ Choice’ award for its XF 450.
