For the second year in a row, Scania’s new generation trucks have won the 1000-point test, the most comprehensive comparison test for trucks in Europe.
“This comprehensive test confirms, once again, not only the excellent fuel performance of our new generation trucks, but also many other attractive features that set Scania apart,” says Alexander Vlaskamp, Head of Scania Trucks Division. “We have now introduced the full range of new generation trucks in Europe and the response has been overwhelming.”
This year’s testing focused on mid-size cabs with power ratings up to 450bhp, pitting the Scania R 450 against the Mercedes Actros 1845 and Volvo FH 460.
The 1,000-point test involves an international team of truck journalists who evaluate the trucks subjectively as well as objectively measure. The test extends along a 180-kilometre road in southwestern Germany. The 1,000-point test is organized by the German company ETM Verlag, whose publications include the magazines Lastauto Omnibus and Fernfahrer, and is carried out in cooperation with several major European business magazines.
With the recent introduction of updated cruise control with active prediction, pulse and slip function and Hill Descent Control, Scania has improved its already outstanding fuel performance. The Pulse & Glide system provides the opportunity to increase the speed – Pulse – and then the freewheel – Glide – for a longer period of time, thus making better use of the car’s kinetic energy on mountain roads.
This new feature pays off in terms of lower fuel consumption and helped Scania be the clear winner in the 1000-point test. The Scania also proved to be the quickest truck in all comparison situations, including initial acceleration, highway driving and uphill driving. Scania’s new generation truck excelled in the categories of cab, powertrain and performance, fuel consumption, cost and payload. Overall, Scania quickly moved ahead of the competition in the 2018 1,000-point test with a total of 954.5 points, followed by Mercedes with 943.2 points and Volvo with 941.9 points.
Since the launch of the new generation of trucks in autumn 2016, Scania has swept the boards in comparative and individual press tests. Scania won all three previous major European comparison tests, breaking records or achieving outstanding performance in more than 40 individual press tests carried out in 11 European countries where fuel consumption was assessed.
