Electric vehicle sales in 2023 are 3.5 million higher than in 2022, an increase of 35% year-on-year. This is more than six times higher than in 2018, just 5 years ago. In 2023, there were more than 250,000 new registrations per week, more than the annual total in 2013, ten years earlier. Electric cars accounted for about 18% of all cars sold in 2023, up from 14% in 2022 and just 2% 5 years ago, in 2018.
In the NZE scenario, electric car sales reach about 65% of total car sales in 2030. Going forward in this scenario, electric car sales should increase by an average of 23% per year from 2024 to 2030. For comparison, electric cars Sales are up approximately 35% in 2023 compared to 2022.
Electrification is also occurring in other vehicle segments, although the share of electric bus and truck sales in 2023 was only about 3% and 1%, respectively.
