The EPA’s 2027 ultra-low NOx rules go into effect on January 1, 2027. That means the first engines designed to meet those standards will hit the street in early 2026. That leaves truck and engine makers with less than three years to pull off the engineering miracle. Simple. This is a shorter period of time than warranty engine makers will have to add to new engines and emissions systems.
In this episode of HDT Talks Trucking, Equipment Editor Jim Park talks with ACT Research Vice President and Senior Analyst Tim DeNoyer about the potential for pre-buying ahead of new emissions rules. He believes the cost and complexity of the new trucks and engines will see fleets stockpiling pre-2027 trucks before the 2026 deadline.
In this episode:
The cost of pre-purchasing emissions in California may exceed fuel savings. Prices for used trucks will be very competitive. Fewer diesel engine makers. Impact of the CARB Omnibus Clean Truck Rule. Effect of Phase 3 greenhouse gases in 2030. The industry will survive, and may even be stronger
