The IRU has reiterated the urgent need for safe parking areas across Europe, including those with alternative fuel infrastructure, at a conference in the European Parliament. The discussion was followed by the European Truck Stop Awards Ceremony.
At a conference organized by the European Secure Parking Organization (ESPORG) in the European Parliament, the IRU stressed the urgent need for safe parking zones across Europe.
“We continue to see a significant shortage of safe and secure truck parking areas, which is an essential requirement for safe and secure truck parking areas,” said Raluca Marian, EU Advocacy Director at IRU, who joined a panel of industry experts on how safe truck parking areas can serve as hubs for alternative fuel infrastructure. Our drivers work.
“In the EU, the revision of the TEN-T Regulation and the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) provides a unique opportunity to increase the number of safe truck parking areas, as well as to further enhance their importance by deploying alternative fuel infrastructure within them.”
“These two pieces of legislation should create conditions conducive to safe parking,” she added.
European Truck Parking Award
The event concluded with an awards ceremony for the second edition of the “Excellence in Truck Parking” award. The initiative aims to promote excellence and help disseminate good practices related to improving the safety, security and quality of services provided by truck stop operators to professional truck drivers in Europe.
This year’s winner in the large parking space category (50+ spaces) is the “mowiz TRUCK Astigarraga” car park, located in northern Spain, near the Spanish-French border.
The jury also awarded the car park “On Turtle La Jonquera”, also in Spain, as the best small parking area (up to 50 spaces).
“The IRU is proud to be a member of the international jury and to contribute to this year’s European Truck Park of the Year award,” said Raluca Marian.
She added: “We strongly support highlighting excellence in the land transport sector, especially when it contributes to the well-being of drivers and helps improve the image of the profession and attract new drivers.”
In letters sent to EU policymakers, the IRU called for reviewing the objectives for safe and secure parking areas in the ongoing review of the TEN-T Regulation and strengthening those for the deployment of alternative fuel infrastructure.
