First announced last year, Volvo Trucks’ self-driving Vera vehicle is moving quickly in testing – now transporting containers from a logistics hub to a port terminal in Gothenburg, Sweden. The test is part of a collaboration between Volvo Trucks (OTC: VLVLY) and DFDS, the ferry and logistics company.
“We want to be at the forefront of connected and autonomous transportation,” said Torben Carlsen, CEO of DFDS. “This collaboration will help us develop an efficient, flexible and sustainable long-term solution to receive autonomous vehicles arriving at our gates, benefiting our customers, the environment and our business.”
Vera is an electric-powered self-driving vehicle. It does not have a driver’s cabin and is designed to travel short distances from one point to another. In Gothenburg, Vera transports fully loaded containers from the DFDS logistics center to APM terminals at the port.
“We now have the opportunity to apply Vera in an ideal environment and further develop its capabilities for other similar operations,” said Mikael Karlsson, Vice President of Autonomous Solutions at Volvo Trucks.
